Mein blauer Weihnachtsquilt / My blue Christmas Quilt

Na klar, musste noch eine 2. Variante genäht werden, mein blauer Weihnachtsquilt. Weiterhin ist draußen vor dem Fenster schönstes Wetter mit viel Sonne, auch ist mir ist gerade eher nach Schwimmen gehen, als an Weihnachten zu denken, aber im November anzufangen ist dann leider auch zu spät. Also bringe ich mich etwas in weihnachtliche Stimmung und zeige Dir eine andere Variante des Weihnachts Quilts, dessen Anleitungen Du in meinem Pattern Shop findet. Dort findest Du auch meine Fahrzeug, Tier und Piraten Blöcke, falls Du die noch nicht kennst. Und hier geht es zum letzten Blogbeitrag mit dem 1. Weihnachtsquilt.

Of course, I had to sew a second version, my blue Christmas quilt. Moreover, outside the window, the weather is absolutely beautiful with plenty of sunshine. Right now, I feel more like going swimming than thinking about Christmas. However, starting in November would be too late, unfortunately. So, I’m getting myself into a Christmas mood and showing you another version of the Christmas quilt, whose patterns you can find in my Pattern Shop. Stoffauswahl / Choice of fabric

Meinen erster Weihnachtsquilt habe ich ausschließlich mit Solids genäht, das mache ich ja meistens, um auch gleich die Photos für meinen Shop zu bestücken. Einen 2. Weihnachtsquilt wollte ich aber mit allen möglichen Stoffen aus meinem Stash nähen, auch das ist fast schon Tradition. Ich kaufe mir selten neue Stoffe speziell für einen Quilt, sondern nehme wir meinen Stoffvorrat, ordne den endlich mal wieder nach Farben und dann geht es an den Zuschnitt der Blöcke.

My first Christmas quilt I sewed exclusively with solids, I do that most of the time, to also equip the photos for my store. A 2nd Christmas quilt, however, I wanted to sew with all kinds of fabrics from my stash, this is also almost a tradition. I rarely buy new fabrics specifically for a quilt, but take my fabric stash, finally arrange it by color again and then it goes to the cutting of the blocks.

Halt, einen Stoff habe ich mir schon gekauft, den hellblauen Hintergrundstoff mit den Schneeflocken. Ob das wirklich Schneeflocken sind, weiß ich gar nicht, aber es passte so gut, daher behaupte ich das einfach mal so. Gekauft habe ich den Stoff bei Joluma einem entzückenden Stoffgeschäft am Chiemsee und genäht habe ich damit die 9″ Blöcke.

Wait, I already bought one fabric, the light blue background fabric with the snowflakes. Whether these are really snowflakes, I do not know at all, but it fit so well, so I claim that just so. I bought the fabric at Joluma a delightful fabric store at Chiemsee and sewed with it the 9″ blocks.

Den Zuschnitt mache ich meistens in einem Rutsch, in diesem Fall also wirklich alle 42 Blöcke auf einmal. Mein Tipp dazu ist mit Klarsichtfolien zu arbeiten, so bekommt jeder Block seine eigene Folie, in der man die Stoffstücke sammeln kann.

I usually do the cutting all at once, in this case, for all 42 blocks. My tip for this is to work with clear plastic sheets, so each block gets its own sheet where you can gather the fabric pieces.

Meine Reihenfolge beim Zuschnitt ist dabei wie folgt:
Ich starte mit den Borders. Dazu schneide ich mir 9 1/2 breite Streifen und gehe Schritt für Schritt die Anleitungen durch. Meistens schneide ich auch gleich die B Teile, wenn sie größer als 6 1/2″ sind und hebe die kleinen Reststücke für später auf, die braucht man ja noch für den Hintergrund.
2. Schritt sind die Teile für den Hintergrund (außer Borders). Dazu schneide ich mir jeweils Streifen in ver. Breiten (Du wirst schnell merken, welche Größen hier relevant sind) und kann so recht zügig den Zuschnitt der Hintergrundstücke machen.

My cutting process follows the following order:
I start with the borders. For this, I cut 9 1/2″ wide strips and then follow the cutting diagram. Usually, if the B parts are larger than 6 1/2″ inches“, I also cut them at this stage and save the smaller leftover pieces for later use in the background.
The second step involves cutting the background pieces (excluding borders). I cut strips of various widths (you’ll quickly notice which sizes are relevant here). This allows me to efficiently complete the cutting of background pieces.

Dann kommt der 3. und auch mein liebster Schritt, wenn es an die bunten Stoffe und vor allem die Auswahl dieser geht. Vor mir auf dem Tisch liegen einige bunte Stoffstapel schön sortiert nach Farben. Für den jeden Block suche ich mir die passenden Stoffe aus und schneide alle für den Block benötigten Teile. Klar, auch diese Teile wandern in die Klarsichtfolie und sind somit gut verpackt bis es ans Nähen geht. Und dann geht es endlich ans Nähen.

Then comes the 3rd, and also my favorite, step when it comes to the colorful fabrics, especially the selection process. I have several stacks of colorful fabrics nicely sorted by colors in front of me on the table. For each block, I pick the suitable fabrics and cut all the pieces needed for that block. Of course, these pieces also go into the clear plastic sheets, so they are well organized and protected until it’s time to sew. And then, finally, it’s time for sewing.

Blockzusammenstellung blauer Weihnachtsquilt / Blue Christmas Quilt Block Assembly

All Blöcke sind genäht, gebügelt und gepresst, das mache ich mit all meinen Blöcken, indem ich sie einige Tage in ein großes Pappbuch oder unter etwas anderes schweres lege. Es gibt 43 Blöcke und auch mein blauer Weihnachtsquilt sollte so viele Blöcke wie möglich zeugen, daher habe ich mich wieder für die 6×7 Blockzusammenstellung entscheiden. Macht zwar nur 42, aber aus dem Block Nummer 43 nähe ich eventuell noch ein passendes Kissen.

All the blocks are sewn, ironed, and pressed – that’s what I do with all my blocks. I place them for a few days in a large cardboard book or under something heavy. There are 43 blocks, and my blue Christmas quilt should have as many blocks as possible, so I’ve chosen the 6×7 block arrangement again. It makes 42 blocks, but I might use block number 43 to make a matching cushion.

Anschließend wird so lange hin und hergeschoben, bis alle Blöcke an Ihrem richtigen Platz liegen und die Zusammenstellung harmoniert.

Afterwards, the blocks are shifted back and forth until they are all in the right place and the quilt assembly harmonizes.

In jeder der Quiltblockanleitungen findest Du für beide Quiltblockgrößen 2 Vorschläge für Quiltzusammenstellungen inkl. Stoffzuschnitt und Stoffverbrauch für Sashings und Borders. Für die 18″ Blöcke ist eine 3×4 Blockzusammenstellung mit Sternen im Sashing enthalten und eine weitere mit 4×4 Blöcken.

In each of the quilt block patterns, you will find 2 suggestions for quilt assemblies for both quilt block sizes, along with fabric cutting instructions and fabric requirements for sashings and borders. For the 18″ blocks, there is a 3×4 block arrangement with stars in the sashing and another one with 4×4 blocks.

Für die 9″ Blöcke habe ich eine 5×5 Blockzusammenstellung integriert und eine mit 5×5 Blöcken mit Sternen im Sashing. Wie die Sterne im Sashing aussehen, zeige ich Dir in meinem Blogbeitrag über meinen Weihnachtsquilt mit weißem Hintergrund.

For the 9″ blocks, I’ve incorporated a 5×5 block assembly and another one with 5×5 blocks featuring stars in the sashing. I will show you how the stars in the sashing look like in my blog post about my Christmas quilt with a white background.

Jetzt genieße ich aber erstmal das fertige Quilttop und freue mich darüber, daß die Blockzusammenstellung gut geklappt hat und mein blauer Weihnachtsquilt schön festlich aussieht.

Now I’m going to enjoy the finished quilt top and I’m happy that the block assembly worked out well and my blue Christmas quilt looks so festive.

Das Quilting / The Quilting

Bevor es ans Quilten geht, kommt die Überlegung, welcher Stoff es für das Backing sein soll. Weihnachtlich, kuschlig, warm, was liegt da näher, als einen flauschigen Flanellstoff zu nehmen. Gefunden habe ich den Stoff auch bei Joluma, ein herrlich kuschliger blau-weiß karierter Stoff, der sich super für das Backing eignet. Ich mußte den Stoff ziemlich stückeln, weil er nicht breit genug lag. Normalerweise schneide ich den Stoff dafür diagonal durch und nähe ihn versetzt wieder zusammen, habe mich aber diesmal dagegeben entscheiden und entlang der Linien geschnitten und auch wieder zusammengenäht. Das hat erstaunlich gut geklappt und man sieht die Näht kaum.

Before starting the quilting process, there’s the consideration of which fabric to use for the backing. What could be more fitting for a Christmas quilt than a cozy and warm flannel fabric? I found the perfect fabric at Joluma – a wonderfully soft blue and white checkered flannel that works great for the backing. I had to piece the fabric together quite a bit because it wasn’t wide enough. Usually, I cut the fabric diagonally and sew it back together offset, but this time I decided to cut along the lines and sew it back together. Surprisingly, it worked really well, and the seams are hardly noticeable.

Mein Quiltsandwich hefte ich immer mit Sicherheitsnadeln zusammen. Diesmal gleich doppelt, weil ich den Backingstoff falschherum, also mit der linken Seite nach unten, angeheftet habe. Oh, was habe ich geflucht, ich habe das natürlich erst gemerkt, als ich den Quilt hochgehoben habe…

I always baste my quilt sandwich together with safety pins. This time, I did it double, because I attached the backing fabric the wrong way around, with the wrong side facing down. Oh, how I cursed when I realized it only after lifting the quilt…

Also alle Nadeln wieder runter, Quilt, Batting und Backing neu zusammengelegt und alle Nadeln wieder neu befestigt.

So I took all the pins off again, repositioned the quilt, batting, and backing, and then reattached all the pins again.

Gequiltet habe ich einfache Wellenlinien, wie so oft. Da schlägt wahrscheinlich jeder gute Quilter die Hände über dem Kopf zusammen, wenn man auschließlich gerade oder wellige Linien quiltet, aber zu mehr bin ich nicht in der Lage bzw. habe oft nicht die Muse dazu. Es ist und bleibt einfach nicht mein liebster Schritt, das Quilting. Sieht aber trotzdem schon aus, oder?

I quilted simple wavy lines, as I often do. Every skilled quilter would probably cringe at the idea of quilting exclusively straight or wavy lines, but it’s just what I can manage or often don’t have the patience for. Quilting remains not my favorite step. Nevertheless, it’s looking good, right?

Mein blauer Weihnachtsquilt muß leider jetzt erstmal warten, weil ich auch hier noch auf den Stoff für das Binding warte. Ich habe einen rot-weiß gestreiften Stoff bestellt und hoffe, der passt zum Quilttop und Backing. Ich halte Dich auf dem Laufenden.

My blue Christmas quilt has to wait for now, as I am still waiting for the fabric for the binding. I have ordered a red and white striped fabric, and I hope it will match the quilt top and backing. I will keep you updated.
